“Every day means feeling better”

Our outstanding team of therapists and rehab care providers are ready to work with you 7 days a week, providing as many hours of daily therapy as you need. Our special rehabilitation program, designed for the orthopedic patient, is an agressive one as we aim to get you back home quickly.

A testimony to the marvelous restorative care provided at Marquis Rehabilitation & Nursing Center is that former patients refer loved ones to our facility and they themselves return if the need for further rehab ever arises.

Just 10 days shy of one year at Marquis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Renee Whitehall is finally going home. Born in Cedar rapids, Iowa on July 6th 1979, Renee was admitted to Marquis' short term Rehabilitation Unit on June 19 2007 with a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. At 27 years old, working on her degree in Criminal Justice at John Jay College, she was stricken and came to Marquis via stretcher, unable to use her upper and lower extremities and unable to perform even the simplest tasks. The one thing that remained intact was her determination.

The staff at Marquis came to know and love Renee as day by day we saw her rigorous Physical Therapy routine pay off. Her enthusiastic spirit and fun loving sense of humor inspired every Certified Nurses Aide, Therapist, Food Service Employee, Houskeeping Staff, Recreation Personnel, Physician, Social Worker, Dietician and Nurse. She is featured here in a photo surrounded by her "Marquis Family" who wished her a fond farewell along with her peers. She was presented with a cake (which she cut by herself)  as well as many parting gifts, including a patented T-Shirt given to all Rehab graduates. Moved to tears all she could say was "Thank you all for everything." Renee served as a true inspiration to those who have had the pleasure of caring for her through this journey.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances, the weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until the muscles cannot be used at all and the patient is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases, the disorder is life-threatening and is considered a medical emergency.

The patient is often put on a respirator to assist with breathing. Most patients, however, recover from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, although some continue to have some degree of weakness.

Meet Douglas Schmeider today. Doug has lost over 80 lbs and has resumed running a very successful construction business since his discharge from Marquis. He recently visited The Marquis to say hello and is pictured here with our adminstrator, Jerry Enella.

“My stay at Marquis couldn’t have been better; from the aides to the Nursing staff, through the therapy - they took good care of me! They also set up the transition for me to go home... So that I can continue to advance and improve.”

Arthur Sloan, a vibrant 65 year old, suffered a massive stroke that affected his left side. Upon his discharge from Bellevue Hospital, he required major rehabilitation. Taking the advice of a social worker at the hospital, Arthur checked in at the Marquis Care Center, where he embarked on a comprehensive course of therapy.

“The therapy at Marquis was good, really good, and now I am up and around.”
