Mascot at Marquis

Marquis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center held a unique celebration for Regis, their long time mascot. Regis is a Congo African Grey who turned 20 years old this past week. His owner, Joanne Wallis, who works at the facility is also the former owner of the 'Birds Nest' in Glen Head and a member of the non profit organization Long Island Parrot Society. She has been bringing Regis to the Marquis for periodic Pet Therapy visits for nearly fifteen years. The residents were entertained with live music, dined on a cake featuring a photo of Regis and had a chance to hold him and be part of the show. The average lifespan of an African Grey is 50 years and if you wish to donate to the Long Island Parrot Society, their address is P.O. Box 2754 North Babylon, NY11703, or you may visit their website http://www.liparrotsociety.org/.

Art Exhibit at Marquis

Long time Glen Cove resident and Purple Heart Veteran, Edward Ritter II, exhibited the works of art he had created while stationed on the USS Intrepid during World War II this past week at Marquis Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, where he currently resides. At that time a newspaper journalist and photographer from NY decided to visit the ship during it's tour and write a story about him. Unfortunately, while up in his hellcat, a kamikaze hit the deck of the intrepid and took out Edward's cabin, destroying all of his paintings. Today only photos exist of those original works, which fortunately Ed received a copy of later. The show was coordinated by his loving granddaughter, Valerie Junge and attended by family, friends, neighbors as well as County Executive, Tom Suozzi, who purchased a painting he fondly remembers hanging in his childhood home. Edward is a true hero veteran, an absolute artistic gift to the world, a devoted father, grand-father and great-grandfather to be held in high ranks. His profound works are available for purchase, please visit www.EDRITTERONLINE.COM for more information.
