Out & About in Glen Cove

Welcome to Glen Cove, a vibrant and growing community on Long Island’s historic Gold Coast.  Long Island is rich in places to go and things to see. Here are some of the activities that can keep you busy while you stay:

Garvies Point Museum and Preserve is a center for research on Long Island geology and American Indian archeology. The museum contains collections of artifacts and beautiful dioramas displaying the lifestyle of Long Island Indian tribes and the curious geological phenomenon of the area. Films and lectures are presented in the museum theater periodically, while interactive exhibits and craft workshops make Garvies Point child friendly.

Garvies Point Preserve is 62 acres of glacial moraine covered by forests, thickets, and meadows. Five miles of hiking trails (including trails for the blind) pass through wooded areas exhibiting various stages of forest succession, along high cliffs on the shoreline, and down the beach. The preserve contains 60 species of trees, numerous shrubs, vines, and wildflowers. There are more than 140 species of birds to observe, including the scarlet tanager. Quiet hikers can observe woodchucks, opossums, and raccoons along the trains. You will be encouraged to note the geological features of the cliffs and the multicolored-clays of the beach.

Welwyn Preserve is a 204-acre estate that once belonged to the son of oil magnate Charles Pratt. The family mansion is now used by the Nassau County Holocaust Committee (see below). Hiking maps of the four nature trails are available at the park office. They traverse wooded stream valleys, freshwater ponds and swamps, and a coastal salt marsh. Over 100 species of birds as well as numerous small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians call the preserve their home.

Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is dedicated to driving home the personal ramifications of the Holocaust to every individual. More than a dozen actual survivors volunteer regularly to speak to visitors about their experiences.  The beautiful and touching Children’s Memorial Garden is the result of a penny drive among the children of Long Island to remember the million and a half children who were killed in the Holocaust.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum follows the history of flight from kites to space exploration. Kid friendly but informative for adults, the exhibits lead you through the development and realization of one of man’s persistent dreams. An Aerospace park contains actual military aircrafts for viewing and exploring, while its IMAX shows thrilling films of aviation and non-aviation related topics. In the golden Age gallery, you can see The Spirit of St. Louis, the actual plane Lindbergh flew in his historic Atlantic crossing.

Old Westbury Gardens used to be the home of John Phipps. The Charles-II style mansion is open to touring, as are the 160 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds, and lakes.  It also includes a golf course.

Americana Manhasset, also known as Miracle Mile, is one of the most glamorous shopping strips on the east coast. The list of designer stores runs form Ann Taylor to Cartier, Oscar de la Renta to Ralph Lauren.

Glen Cove is bordered by Long Island Sound, and has a pleasant mix of beaches and marinas, as well as a growing downtown area.

If you’re looking for a place to stay, the elegant Glen Cove Mansion (formerly Harrison House), located on 55 secluded acres, should be your first stop. Formerly the residence of the Pratt family of Standard Oil, the Mansion Hotel is a landmark Georgian estate reminiscent of the estates in The Great Gatsby. Another lovely option is Roslyn Claremont, located 8 miles further. The Roslyn Claremont is located on the Roslyn estate, combining old world charm with modern convenience. Fireplaces and four-posters are standard decoration in their meticulously designed suites.
